Record direct to your USB device

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

We all like to watch music videos or films on our portable gadgets, but isn’t it a lot of hassle to get the file there in the first place. You either have to record to DVD and then convert to Mpeg4 format for your device to be able to read it, or have your PC or laptop connected to the TV or satellite receiver and record straight to that before transferring it to your device.

You can remove all of these steps by using the iRecorder. This allows you to record directly to your iPod or any USB device that supports the Mpeg4 format. The slender, stylish white recorder connects to any source with an RCA jack output and using the USB port, allows your device to connect to it giving the recorded program full access to your devices storage. This gadget also has an AV-OUT giving you the ability to view back what you have recorded.

The iRecorder is 11cm x 9cm x 1.5cm in size and comes with a remote control that allows you to set the timer for the recording and 2 sets of 3in1 AV cables. It claims to give 3 hours of recording for every 1Gb of storage on your portable device.

So for those not too technically minded, this could be the perfect aid to get you watching films when out and about.

Shaking is the Future

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

How do you share files with your friends? I suspect, like me, you have to be near a computer and transfer files onto a USB memory stick. Or if you are out and about, maybe you send it by e-mail via your phone which would incur a cost. Wouldn’t it be great to have gadgets that gave you another option to share your music, films and other files?

A company called Leyio may have the next generation in file sharing. It comes via a new PSD (Personal Sharing Device) simply called the Leyio. This small device contains 16Gb of internal storage, a fingerprint reader and an LCD display. What’s so different about this device? Well, the way it transfers files. All you do is select the file on the screen, scan your fingerprint to give authorisation and then shake. Using a wireless ultra-wide band technology, the file will be received by another PSD doing the same thing. Transfer speed is 10Mb per second so you won’t need to be shaking for too long.

It also comes with a USB port so you can share files with someone with a USB memory stick, or alternatively the neat little gadget features a shuttle which detaches and plugs into a USB port on any computer.

No prices have been released yet, but it seems these sorts of boys toys could become very popular in the future.

Smart Finder Transmitter

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

I have lost count of the amount of times I have lost my house keys around the home and spent ages looking for them when I’m in a rush to get out. Or misplaced one of my phone gadgets and its battery is dead so I can’t phone it to find it. What I need is some way of tagging it with a receiver.

Well it’s lucky I came across the Smart Finder, this means I’m able to find anything that gets tagged. The Smart Finder is a remote control transmitter that comes with 4 colour coded receivers. The transmitter is capable of sending a radio signal through floors and walls activating an 85 decibel alarm. This can be done from up to 25 metres away.

The receivers are 50mm by 30mm and 7mm thick allowing them to easily be connected to handbags or keys via the 2 keyring string attachments or be connected to phones by double sided sticky pads. All of the batteries that are included have an approximate 6 months lifespan.

This smart little gadget will save so much time as according to Harpers Index we spend a year of our lives looking for misplaced items, so the price of around £25 seems a good price for saving all that time.

Gadgets at Rest

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Most of us have a phone, a PDA, and some sort of MP3 player these days. After using for hours their batteries will probably need charging. Not a pretty sight when you have numerous cables lying on your bedside table or in the living room making the place look untidy.

There is now a smart charging station that provides just the solution to this mess. The Portable Electronics Charging Station holds up to 3 devices in a compact organiser. The cables for these devices plug into a power strip that is situated at the back of the unit which means you only need one socket to power the 3 devices instead of the 3 sockets you would have needed before. It also comes with a fabric lined storage bin for storing things like keys or money.

The storage areas are big enough to hold most portable devices. These storage areas lift up for ease of access to the tidied cables that sit underneath it. The construction of the charging station is of wood and is solidly built with a stylish design making it a welcome addition to any desktop or bedside table.

So if you invest in one of these, as well as having tidy cables, you’ll have more space to display all of your gadgets and gizmos.

Gadgets to listen to music underwater

Sunday, February 22nd, 2009

I love lying around on the beach or by the pool when I’m on holiday. You can’t beat it. Taking in the rays and listening to music. However, it can get a little hot so I need to go for a dip in the water every now and then. Of course this means hiding my MP3 player somewhere in case it’s a little too tempting for someone with sticky fingers.

Now there are gadgets that mean I won’t need to leave it behind anymore. The iSwim Waterproof MP3 Case is a 100% waterproof pouch that you can put your iPod or MP3 player in and take it into the swimming pool or the sea with you. The pouch is double zip locked and comes with an arm band and a chord for hanging round your neck. You can even leave the pouch floating on the water once you have filled it with some air. Also included is a pair of waterproof headphones. With a clear front panel, the pouch gives access to the iPod controls.

If you swim lengths and lengths in a swimming pool to keep fit, you must have prayed for a gadget like this so you could while away the time listening to your music. Now you have another reason to get into the pool.

Raw Power

Sunday, February 22nd, 2009

For those of you who are adept at controlling your RC cars, how about a machine that oozes power and class and contains component designs that have won six consecutive national championships.

The Traxxas Slayer Pro 4WD Short-Course Race Truck boasts a power to weight ratio that rivals its full size brother that competes in Championship off road racing events. The design of the rocker-actuated suspension closely resembles the bigger machines plush damping effects and huge travel and with the 4 wheel drive constantly engaged, control through the traffic is vastly increased. The design of the Revo-Spec suspension gives you fine tuning not possible with traditional suspension setups.

The battery box, which is integrated into the 3mm 6061 aluminium chassis which is titanium anodised, accepts 4 AA batteries or a 5 battery rechargeable receiver pack. The Slayer is powered by a TRX 3.3 Racing Engine that has a wide power band. This is transferred to the wheels via the low-mass 2-speed gearbox and propels the nitro RC car to 45mph out of the box. A fuel tank of 150cc allows for a longer running time between fill ups and the dual-stage air filter keeps it running at its best.

The bodywork is based on the look of Mike Jenkins Pro 4 race machine and the wheels have the same satin finish and bead-lock look.

Can RC racing get any closer to the real thing?

Fantastic Light Show

Sunday, February 22nd, 2009

Do you remember the disco ball that hung from the ceiling in most nightclubs in the 70’s? You can purchase them nowadays, but you need lights to bounce off of it to give it the sparkle that every party needs. A gadget is now available that gives the same effect and contains its own lights to reflect off of the walls and ceiling.

The Lightcast Interactive Music Light Show is a portable projector that has 33 coloured LED lights and a parabolic projection system that fills the room in a rainbow of colours. With a diameter of 20cm, the Lightcast is a compact unit.

Amaze your guests with dancing lights that are in time with the music that you play. It does this when you connect it to your MP3 player, Home Audio System, iPod or PC and synchronises with the music.

Controlling the system can be done using the mini remote control that comes with it. As well as turning it on you can set 4 different music moods, smooth, flow, vibe and pulse and 4 mix modes to control the light show. The remote control requires 3 x AAA batteries.

The music gadget comes with an AC adaptor, an audio input cable and a manual to help you get the most out of your new toy.

So, to liven up that party, pick one of these up and dance in a sea of colour.

Drink and Drive like the Celebrities

Saturday, February 21st, 2009

Is it possible? Can you as a non celebrity get away with drinking and driving? Well you can with a new drinking game that is now out. Of course I wouldn’t condone actual drink driving, but this boys toy is a great way to entertain your mates. It consists of a remote control car and handset, a washable tray that sits on top of the car which holds the included plastic shot glass, 4 miniature traffic cones and a manual.

The idea is to set out the course with the cones and then fill the plastic glass with your favourite drink and place it on top of the car. Now try and navigate the course without spilling a drop. And if you can drink your own drink at the same time, all the better. Going by my own experience with gadgets, a wooden floor would be advisable.

I suppose if you already have an RC car you could fashion a plastic tray that could fit to its roof and add a plastic glass, but this would be clumsy and would you really want liquid spilt onto something that you would probably have spend hundreds of pounds on. Besides, you wouldn’t have the cute little traffic cones.

The Hollywood Party Game retails at $49 in the USA.

Coin sorter gadget

Saturday, February 21st, 2009

Gadgets and gifts very rarely round up or down to the nearest pound. You are inevitably left with lots of change that sloshes around in your pocket and then get put on your bedside cupboard or in draws. If you are a really tidy person you collect them up and put them in a container of some sort such as a bottle.

Over the years this loose change builds up until you could very well have hundreds of pounds stashed away. The only way to get it to the bank is to sort it out into money bags. Who can be bothered?

Now you don’t have to be unorganised with the Electronic Coin Sorter which can separate and stack for you. Just put the coins into the top of the unit and press the start button. A few whirring and clicking noises later and the machine will have sorted those coins into the correct tubes. All you need to do is put the correct amount into the money bag.

Not only is this ideal for the home, but it could also be used in shops or even down at a boot sale. Anywhere that lots of change exchanges hands.

For UK coins only, this neat little gadget will cost you around £25.

A home theatre in a watch

Saturday, February 21st, 2009

Do you carry around numerous gadgets when travelling into work? Or if you only have one for music and watching films, do you find it a bit of a pain to carry around, having to put it back in its pouch when you get off the train and then storing it in your bag or coat pocket.

You therefore need to try the TA457 Home Theatre Watch. Sporting a 1.5 inch screen with 260k colour display and 2Gb of storage, this watch brings your home cinema experience wherever you go. As well as being able to view videos you will be able to play MP1, MP2, MP3 and WMA audio files and view JPEG images. Just plug in the headphones and away you go.

To connect your watch to the PC you use a micro USB cable that is included. Software is also included that converts DAT/VCD, MPEG, AVI, WMV, ASF and ASX files to the correct format that the watch uses.

Videos play back on a 128 x 128 pixel screen and the watch also has the ability to change the orientation of the video picture or any other image you have stored on the device. Playback times are 7 hours with the screen off and 4 hours playing videos.

So if you want to watch a film or last nights comedy program without having to carry around bulky gadgets, this could be for you. It is currently selling for around $80 in the USA.
