Eco Media Player

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

Although most of our gadgets come with rechargeable batteries, they still need to be replaced at some point meaning the old ones need to be disposed of. A good step to being eco friendly, but more can still be done.

Trevor Baylis, the father of the wind up radio, now has a new eco gadget for us. The Eco Media Player. This allows you to listen to FM radio, your own music, watch movie clips and photos without the need for any external or battery power. The eco-power dynamo requires 1 minute of winding to provide 45 minutes of play time and fully charged it gives 50 hours of music or 6 hours of video.

The Eco Media Player comes with a 2 inch colour screen with the latest high intensity LED that can double up as a torch. The gadget can come with up to 8Gb of internal memory and the memory expansion slot can take up to 4Gb SD cards. The internal Lithium Ion rechargeable battery can be recharged via your PCs USB port.

Another useful addition to this media player is that you can recharge your mobile using the supplied adapter and eco-dynamo system. You get roughly 3 minutes of talk time with 1 minute of winding.

Is this the future of our gadgets? Time will tell.

Another Asus Hit?

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

Asus have been rolling out netbooks on a consistent basis since their first one, the Eee PC701 that are not just big boys toys. They have been very successful too. At the Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas they unveiled their latest, the Eee PC T91, and they could be onto another winner providing the price is right.

The T91 comes with an 8.9 inch touchscreen that is able to swivel 180 degrees. This uses a hinge that is identical to the one on the Gigabyte M912. Once it has spun round it is able to lay flat over the keyboard and can be used as tablet netbook.

The screen is able to support multi touch in the same way the Apple gadgets can, but also included is a stylus for those with bigger fingers. Accessing the web is possible by both 802.11n Wi-Fi and WiMax.

Other specs revealed were the processor which is an Atom Z520, 1Gb of memory, 160Gb of storage space which contains Windows Home and optional extras including a TV tuner and GPS. The keyboard has also been redesigned making it easier on the hands and fingers.

All in all, the price will probably be a little bit higher than previous models, but with the ability to turn it into a tablet, I can see this selling well.

Is this the smallest laptop in the world?

Friday, February 27th, 2009

Asus have been having great success with their low cost netbooks, with many more manufacturers following suit. We all love their sleek lines and the fact of how small they are, making them the most portable laptops available. However, there are noises murmured from a South Korean company about an even smaller laptop which blurs the line between netbook and MID’s.

The company is UMID and it is due to release a miniscule netbook by the name of mbook or M1. What is known about it so far is it will weigh about 0.7 pounds and come with a 1.1Ghz Atom processor, up to 1Gb of memory and a 4.8 inch touchscreen with a resolution of 1024×600. The storage will be a SSD of up to 32Gb. It will come with a 1.3 Megapixel camera and a mini USB 2. Also included is WiBro, Wi-Fi, WiMAX, HSDPA and Bluetooth 2.0. There is also a possible battery life of 6 hours. The OS that is shipped with it is Linux and a price of $500 has been quoted when it first appears in Korea.

These new small PC gadgets are attracting a lot of attention in the mainstream PC world.

Staring at the Sky at Night

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

If like me, you find the night sky fascinating, but don’t know the first thing about the stars or galaxies, then a gadget called the mySky should be of interest. Ergonomically designed, it resembles a ray gun which when pointed towards the night sky, will align what it sees and identify over 30,000 objects.

Just point and pull the trigger and the full colour LCD screen shows a multi media presentation once the mySky has identified what you are pointing at. It can also give you a guided tour of the night sky indicating the most interesting things to look at.

If you already own a computerised telescope, you can connect the mySky and it will move it to the chosen area such as the constellation of your star sign. For non computerised telescopes, the mySky will add a GPS function. As well as stars, planets and galaxies, the gadget can find satellites orbiting the earth.

When you switch it on it gets a GPS fix and then is ready to use. As well as identifying things in the sky, if you want to know where something is, using the menu system to select that object, the mySky will display an arrow on the LCD screen and you guide it following the arrow to pinpoint its location.

These gadgets come with 4xAA batteries so you can get 6 hours of star gazing pleasure.

Are you the sort of person who carries photos of your kids around with you so you can show them off whenever you get the chance? Do you carry more than one and find that they are getting worn and crumpled sitting in your wallet? Wouldn’t you love a gadget that could help carry multiple photos around with you without ruining them? Well now you can.

Music to Your Ears

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

Now, I don’t know about you, but when I go to sleep I like it to be in nice quiet surroundings. No gadgets playing. Oh I don’t mind the TV on if I’m watching something and then I fall asleep, but other than that I require peace and tranquillity. However, my partner loves to listen to her radio, and not even music. She likes to listen to the talk shows. I’m forever telling her to turn it down while wrapping the pillow around my head to block out the noise.

I think I’ve found the answer to our problem. The Sound Asleep Pillow plugs into a music source via a 3.5mm stereo plug which plays it through the pillow meaning that my partner won’t have to have earphones in her ears all night. Inside the pillow there is a speaker and with the hollow fibre filling she won’t be able to feel it.

The Sound Asleep Pillow is also ideal for learning a different language or listening to self help recordings where your brain soaks up the information it hears while you are asleep. And it’s also great for taking on holiday with you.

These neat gadgets are not machine washable so to clean it you just wipe it down and air dry it.

Missing Your Radio?

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

Do you have an iPod or an iPhone and love listening to your music or watching videos? Every now and then do you get a pang from missing your favourite radio programme? You don’t want to carry around a small radio as well as your other music device? How about an-add on for one of your devices?

An FM radio styled especially for the iPod or iPhone will do the job and it compliments your devices design. The transmitter plugs into the bottom of your iPod/iPhone from where it uses only a small amount of power, and because it has a charge socket you don’t need to remove it to charge your device. Tune into any frequency to enjoy the radio station you are missing.

A neat feature incorporated into the gadget is the ability to save the last frequency when you disconnect it which saves you having to retune the next time it is connected. Also while connected to the iPhone, it will mute when a call comes in and resume when the call is finished.

So don’t worry about trying to find a radio the next time you want to listen to the latest music chart countdown. Grab hold of one of these little gizmos and you can tune in wherever you are.

USB pen with real ink

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

Typing doesn’t seem to suit everyone. There are still quite a few people out there that enjoy the use of a pen. However, what if you need to have typed documents? If you attend lectures and write out notes on paper and have to type them up at a later date, this is doing twice the amount of work.

The Z Pen can bring these 2 actions into one. It is a regular pen with a replaceable ink cartridge, but also contains a transmitter that sends your every stroke to a memory drive. This small unit clips to your writing pad and monitors your pen movement. When you have finished you plug this drive into a USB port on your computer and the included software converts it to digital format coping with 17 languages. This can be done on any computer with the required OS as the software is stored on the device itself which easily recognises joined up writing and capitals.

The Z Pen’s memory can store up to 1Gb of information which equates to thousands of pages of written text. You will have plenty of time to transfer your written words as the Z Pens battery lasts for 75 hours between USB charges.

Due to their amazing function these gadgets are a must for any university student. Other useful items included in the pack are the MyScriptNotes software for PC and a handy USB cable extender.

Have you checked your wallet lately? How many cards do you have that you actually use? Do you have a separate wallet for your travel card and ID? Well here’s a gadget that will make you reduce the amount of cards you carry around with you because it only holds 5 and you will feel like you are doing your bit for the environment.

With this gadgets funky style you can pick it up for around £10 and bin that tatty old wallet that is bursting at the seams.

Lifelike Jet Flying

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

Flying RC Planes gives pleasure to many people and no more so than the F-15 Eagle. This is a 70mph beast that gives you fantastic control to perform numerous stunts and is modelled on the US Air force’s twin engine, all weather tactical fighter.

The F-15 is highly manoeuvrable giving you the ability to perform spins, inverted flight, inside and outside loops, axial rolls and stall turns amongst others. The power to propel it to its top speed comes from the 4300KV brushless motor, ducted fan system and li-po battery.

The 4 channel multifunctional FM radio transmitter has a range of 1000m giving full 3D control of the plane via the 6 channel micro receiver. Take off can be from the hand or the ground, which is aided by its turning front wheel and being constructed of shock resistant EPS foam with strong wings and reinforced fuselage, the weight is thus kept low. Not only can you get the F-15 to 70mph, but to get used to flying it you can control it at low speeds until you have mastered the controls. This puts the plane in the intermediate to advanced flier category.

These RC planes comes mostly built with only minor construction required and takes a short amount of time to get it into a flying condition. A fully charged battery will give you around 15 minutes of adrenaline filled flying time to show off your skills.
