Monday, July 27th, 2009

The remote controlled car comes in many guises and it seems there is a shape, size and design to suit everyone. This makes it even more difficult to choose the right one.

Of course it will depend on your likes and dislikes, but ultimately you want one that will not only give you the thrill of driving, but will also give you a sense of pride in what you drive. And nothing does that more than owning a model of a vehicle that has prestige and history. Enter the classic racing Mini Cooper of the 1960s.

This immaculate replica from Tamiya comes fully assembled so you don’t waste any time in getting the thrills and spills from the little brother of the original. From the front fog lamps to the paint job with the sponsor’s markings already added, the Mini Cooper looks every bit a racing car. The front bumper and grill are metal plated parts giving the authentic look.

The front wheel drive chassis has the motor mounted at the front and the 4-wheel independent double-wishbone suspension gives great handling over all terrains. To save weight, a large hole has been designed into the chassis and for ideal weight balance it features a mid-battery layout.

The transmitter for these remote controlled gadgets is a stick type design and it has an electronic speed controller. You will get up to 15 minutes running time from the 7.2v battery pack.

Remote controlled cars or planes or helicopters have a niche market. The user of these big boy toys has a specific need from a gadget that these miniature sized vehicles can provide. So if you feel that these would give you hours of pleasure, which one do you choose to start your remote controlled hobby? Why choose when you can have two in one with the Heli Mission SWAT Truck.

This aggressive looking model is as rugged as they come. It features running lights, LED headlights and a siren to warn other users around you that you are coming through and nothing is going to stop you. When you tire of being on the ground just open up its roof doors remotely to reveal a futuristic looking helicopter that you can take to the skies with using its own remote control. Controls for the helicopter are via a 3 channel transmitter allowing you to guide it effortlessly.

When you have mastered the controls and are able to land the helicopter on its landing pad in the truck, get a friend to drive the truck and act out a stunt scene where you try to land the helicopter while the truck is moving. You’ll have loads of fun.

If this sounds like the ideal first remote control vehicle purchase for you, it can be picked up for around $100.

Raw Power

Sunday, February 22nd, 2009

For those of you who are adept at controlling your RC cars, how about a machine that oozes power and class and contains component designs that have won six consecutive national championships.

The Traxxas Slayer Pro 4WD Short-Course Race Truck boasts a power to weight ratio that rivals its full size brother that competes in Championship off road racing events. The design of the rocker-actuated suspension closely resembles the bigger machines plush damping effects and huge travel and with the 4 wheel drive constantly engaged, control through the traffic is vastly increased. The design of the Revo-Spec suspension gives you fine tuning not possible with traditional suspension setups.

The battery box, which is integrated into the 3mm 6061 aluminium chassis which is titanium anodised, accepts 4 AA batteries or a 5 battery rechargeable receiver pack. The Slayer is powered by a TRX 3.3 Racing Engine that has a wide power band. This is transferred to the wheels via the low-mass 2-speed gearbox and propels the nitro RC car to 45mph out of the box. A fuel tank of 150cc allows for a longer running time between fill ups and the dual-stage air filter keeps it running at its best.

The bodywork is based on the look of Mike Jenkins Pro 4 race machine and the wheels have the same satin finish and bead-lock look.

Can RC racing get any closer to the real thing?

What a Smashing Time

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009

When we have a cherished RC car the last thing we want to do is smash it into walls or other cars. They are for racing and having fun and you would not want to break any parts off of them. However, deep down, occasionally, don’t you just wish you could race around a track and crash into anything that gets in your way? If this is the case, the Remote Control Stock Cars could be just for you.

The pack comes with 2 stock cars, with all of the usual stock car markings and 2 controllers. In each car there are 3 passengers and 1 driver. On the sides of the cars are sensors that correspond to each figure in the car. The idea is to crash into the sides of the car activating the sensor. This then jettisons the figure out of the car.

This looks to be an ideal way to get rid of any stress you may have accumulated during the day without taking it out on anyone in particular. Set up a small circuit for racing, with the intent of ramming and slamming into each other.

The RC cars are small enough so that you could race them around the house when it’s cold and wet outside and sturdy enough to race around a track in the garden.

These gizmos are suitable for 8 years to adults and cost around £25.

Let’s Go Nitro

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

Is your RC car a little slow for you now? Are you sorely lacking in speed when it comes to racing? Well why not go nitro? A range of cars are available for around $200 that can give that extra bit of thrust that your own RC car doesn’t have.

An example of this is the nitro gas powered Saleen Mustang racing edition car. Within seconds it can reach speeds of about 60 MPH. It is powered by a 1.2 horsepower engine and distributes that power to the 4 wheels via shaft drive and a centrifugally shifted 2 speed gearbox with a nice smooth transition between the 2 gears. Giving greater control is the suspension which is plastic body oil filled shocks and the fuel tank has a size of 75cc.

The components are made of highly durable materials and spare parts are widely available. Also available are parts to upgrade the car to make it even faster. For head to head racing there are 6 different control frequencies allowing for a competitive race with up to 5 of your mates.

The car comes fully assembled and ready to race. The only addition you will need to purchase is a starter kit. A nitro starter kit can be had for around $25 and includes a rechargeable glow plug igniter, a charger, a fuel pump, and large and a small cross wrench for working on your car.

For that extra kick of speed, try nitro.
